How To Create A Website – Simple Steps To Get Your Online Business Running

Creating a website can and should be a fun and profitable endeavor. If done correctly, the entire process of establishing your web presence can be done in as little as 48 hours. In this article, I will establish some basic guidelines any newbie webmaster will want to know in order to make this process as smooth as possible.

The first and most important step is the Planning Stage. This stage is so critical; I could easily devote an entire separate article on this step alone. For this however, I will summarize the important steps and try not to go into too much detail. You will need to decide what you intend to sell or promote. Once this done, you will need to determine your target market. Then you will want to decide on your domain name and targeting keywords. Be sure your domain name is as relevant to what you are selling as possible and try to make it contain that keyword. Now you want to determine the overall layout of your site. Be sure to choose your words and graphics carefully, and try to optimize your site as best you can.

This brings us to our next step, properly designing your website. It is always a good idea to design with both search engines and customers in mind. Proper search engine optimization can provide your site with many free visitors and potential profits. For those looking to do it themselves, proper education should be their number one priority. The best part about this education is most of it can be received free of charge. You have hundreds of resources in article websites such as Goarticles.com and EzineArticles.com. Plus with hundreds of good webmaster forums also available, the extent of your education is only limited by the amount of time and effort you are willing to commit.

With this knowledge of how to design a site, you will now want to create it. Using HTML editors such as Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia’s Dreamweaver, you will find that the actual task of creating your site is quite easy. You can also find other free HTML Editors online by doing a search at Download.com. Other ways of creating your website can be done using templates, or pre-built sites where all you change is the payment link, or web site generators, where you would enter some basic criteria of what you are looking for in your site, and it will create the code for you. You would then use this code for your site.

Of course, you could always hire a programmer. I do not really recommend this because it is good to know how to do things yourself. Plus, programmers can get quite expensive. In the end, the money used to hire a programmer is usually better spent adding to your own product line, or advertising your site.

Now that we have our website design complete, we need to put it on the web to reach our target audience. You will now need to purchase your domain name. Your domain name needs to be planned out in advance and should contain a keyword you are targeting. It is also a good idea to purchase your domain name from a well known and reputable company. Sites such as Yahoo!, GoDaddy, and Network Solutions offer domain names and the support and reliability you are looking for in your web business. Once you have your domain name set up, you will need to set your Name Servers that you will receive from your hosting company.

Which brings us to our next step, “Hosting“. Web hosting is a necessary component of your business; however it does not need to necessarily be a large portion of your budget. I have found excellent deals on hosting packaging just by knowing how to do my homework. First you will need to evaluate your hosting requirements and your budget. Determine the disk space and bandwidth necessary to properly operate your business. Disk space is the amount of room, or how big, your site is. The bandwidth needed is the size of your site multiplied by the number of visitors you anticipate on receiving. If your site is rather small, 10 pages or less and does not have too many graphics or flashy animations, your required disk space may only be a few megabytes. However if you selling many items, or if you are selling downloadable items or software, your disk space may need to be a few gigs or higher.

Compare plans and do your homework. Consider using sites such as Findmyhost.com or Ratemyhost.com to help you with your comparison shopping. There are a few things I would suggest you look for while searching for your host. The servers’ uptime or how long it has been up and running is important. When your server is up, you are able to conduct business. If you server is down however, your sites’ “doors” are closed and you could be losing potential customers and sales. It is also a good idea to look at the customer reviews of the host you are considering. If you spot a trend of poor reviews, you may want to reconsider your choice. Does your host offer you real time site statistics and the ability to analyze this info? I have found many more hosts offering CPanel, Fantastico, and AwStats because of the many features of these valuable software programs. Bandwidth and Disk Space limits should also come into consideration along with an email client. Most good hosts offer step by step instructions on integrating your Microsoft Outlook to receive your sites emails.

Now that we have our store up and running, how are we going to accept payments? Enter the payment processor. A payment processor allows you to accept most major credit cards, checks, and sometimes cash for a small fee. Not only do they allow a smooth and secure transaction, they also help protect you and your rights should a dispute arise. Popular payment processors include Paypal, Clickbank, and 2CheckOut.

You now have a complete site, and have tested every link to be sure they all work properly. Now we need to get this site from your computer to your web hosts computer. Piece of cake with an FTP program. FTP, or file transfer protocol allows you to transfer your files from your computer to another computer. You can find free FTP software by doing a search on Download.com. I have had good results with FTP Commander and CoreFTP, as they have easy to use interfaces. Once you have your FTP software, you will need to open the folder that contains your site and send it to the correct folder on your sites servers. This information is obtained from the confirmation email you have received from your hosting company.

Finally, we come to my personal favorite stage, promotion. Good promotion is very important because if no one knows you exist, your product will not sell no matter how good it is. Quite possibly the best type of promotion is search engine optimization. This traffic is so coveted because not only is it highly targeted, it is also FREE! Sites with high search engine rankings on even moderately searched keywords can get hundreds or thousands of visitors each month. This can lead to dozens of free sales. However, keep in mind, search engines algorithms can change at any time. This could devastate your rankings and your traffic if you depend entirely on search engines to bring you visitors. Of course if you cannot earn your way to the top of search engine rankings, you could always buy your way to the top. Using PPC or Pay-per-Click, marketing you pay only for each visitor that comes to your site through that search query. This is a great way to gain customers, but can become very costly; with some keywords receiving bids in excess of 5 dollars per click. Some popular PPC networks are Google Adwords, GoClick, and Yahoo! Search Marketing, formerly Overture.

There are also some free ways to earn traffic to your site. Exchange Networks usually work on a “you view my site or ad for X seconds, and I will view your site or ad” or similar method. This can bring you lots of free traffic fairly quickly. You will generally see these services listed under Traffic Exchanges, Banner Exchanges, or Link Exchanges.

Message Boards, Forums, and Safelists are also excellent ways of promoting your site with minimal investment. Sites such as Yahoo! Groups and Herculist allow you to email messages to other members with similar interests. PTC, or Paid to Click marketing is similar to the search engines PPC but instead of search queries, you are targeting a user database. This can bring you a ton of visitors to your site in a short amount of time, but sometimes this traffic is low converting due to the visitors are paid to visit your site. They are just after the incentive and really do not care so much about the actual product being promoted.

The last topic of promotion is article marketing. This is perhaps some to the best marketing you can do. When you write an article, you place your signature or brief bio about yourself at the bottom. You then submit it to article directories. These article directories give you a free link to your site, helping your search engine rankings. These directories also allow other webmasters to use your article on their site, thus providing you another link and further increasing your search engine rankings. Another great feature of article marketing is based on the quality of your article, you could become an authority on your subject; thus building trust in what you have to say, which usually leads to more sales.

As you can see, creating a website is much easier than you probably first imagined. With just a little time and effort, and even less cash, you can create your own web store open 24 hours a day. Using these tips will provide you a solid foundation to build upon when fashioning your new site. Please note that this article is not meant to be all inclusive, but more like a beginning of your webmaster career. And always keep in mind as with any endeavor, your sites’ success is largely dependent on your commitment to get it done.

FrontPage and FrontPage Extensions

It has been announced recently that Microsoft are withdrawing FrontPage from their product range. I’m not a great fan of this particular piece of software, but a lot of people are and there are a lot of FrontPage built websites in existence.

There are some concerns however, about the future of existing FrontPage websites and, in particular, those using FrontPage extensions. These extensions are what power the “bells and whistles” inherent in the software that made it worth using. The extensions provide such dynamic addons as:

* Forms processing

* Themes

* Search form

* Bulletin board

* Security

* Hit counter

* Database features

The concern is that Microsoft are withdrawing support for the software itself and for the extensions. If you have a website built with Frontpage then the server on which the website is hosted will need to support extensions. At worst, once Microsoft have withdrawn, hosts will remove from their servers the extension support and the website will no longer function as designed. At best, the hosts will leave things as they are until the first bug / security threat unviels itself and then be forced to withdraw.

The replacement product has now been renamed Expression and is a completely new product and therefore is not compatible with FrontPage, therefore FrontPage extensions are dead. Expression has only been released in beta format so there is, as yet, no official release and the future looks bleak for any FrontPage websites.

How To Build A Web Site & Develop It’s Full Potential – Part Two

In my previous set article (Part One) I try to make it clear that building a web site is an investment in time and some money as well. In this article I will just try and lay out the fundamentals required when you go about thinking about building that professional web site. Remember this is not for the one-page web site or blog. This is for a scaled development where you would like to bring some information to the public or to sell some merchandise on the web.

Remember, places like Ebay are sometimes much better at selling a few articles or objects. If you want to sell 5 copies of one book then a web-site is not the way to go. However, if you want to sell or bring information that is updated and changed on a constant basis to the public then most definitely you need an internet web site presence.

I am also not going to discuss hypothetical situations in these articles. I will try and involve you in my own real life frustration and experience. This is not trying to hype my web site. The details of my web sites and blogs are in my author signature anyway. However, using a real “live” and real “life” example may bring home to you the problems you will face.

To just bear in mind that I did personally act as a CTO (Chef Technological Officer) for many years at three highly successful technology companies. But it is one hell of a different ball game when you have to almost everything for yourself. So here we go.

The Cookbook:

Web Server – Two choices here: Linux or Windows (and it does make a difference)And what else will my provider offer me?

The Software YOU will use to design your site – Major choices are usually FrontPage or Dreamweaver and fanatics exist about either. There are many other great FREE choices as well.

The knowledge you have of HTML (and soon of course I will mention PHP and ASP two competing technologies (by the way PHP rocks!)

The Content which in this case does not only mean text. The content meaning images, text, internal links, navigation, menu structure.

What you want to accomplish? – On one web site I want to sell Real Estate. On another web site I want to show off my writing publications. Yet on another one, believe it or not I run Virgin Earth Article Submissions which is geared to articles about places in every country in the world and travel. (You cannot publish articles about sports there for instance.) Each one of these sites has a different PURPOSE. Each one has a different agenda. Each one is a place where one may go and visit for different reasons. In other words the Clientele is NOT the same. So they have to be geared totally differently.
Next on your list (or perhaps first) is who is my clientele? Who do I want to attract? Not HOW (yet) but WHO!

Time you have to build it and spend nurturing it. There is NO SUCH THING ON THE WEB as “if you build they will come.” Forget it. Don’t even entertain that dream. You will be building your site and nurturing it like it is a new-born baby, and it will frustrate you like a 14 year old daughter about to go out on her first date. Be wary and don’t underestimate here. You need TIME to build and run a web site.

That is the basic cookbook. Soon we will be adding a whole slew of chapters to it. Soon we will be explaining all those nutty terms that drive us crazy. But for now, for this part that is the information you need to consider. In my next article I will explain and try and educate just how important the answers to these questions are down the road. Thinking ahead and long term will save an incredible amount of money and frustration down the road.

How to Install a New WordPress Theme With FileZilla and Cpanel

How to Install a New WordPress Theme with FileZilla and Cpanel.

It’s Great that you’ve installed your new WordPress software in your domain. But you need to change the generic wordpress themes with customized theme to make your blog beautiful and full of different functional capabilities.

You can install your new wordpress theme with Filezilla which is recommended or the Cpanel which is the more tedious part. Now lets begin;

Option 1:How to install your New WordPress theme with FileZilla

* Download your WordPress Theme and Unzip. Save in a location on your computer.

* First, download the FTP which will be FileZilla and run. To access your web files, log in the FTP with your webhost address, your username, and password. The default Port connection is 21 but you can leave it empty. Then connect.

* After successfully connecting, you will be able to see the files on y our computer in the left window and your webhost root document files in the Remote site which is on the right.

* Locate your saved unzipped WordPress Theme.

* Go over to the remote server on the right of the FTP and open the public_html folder, which contains your root document files. If you have installed your new wordpress theme on your domain, then you would see the wordpress files and folders and also the “theme” folder where the new wordpress theme should go.

* Drag the new unzipped wordpress folder to the theme folder. The file transfer then starts.

* After completing the file transfer, head over to your wordpress dashboard by logging in to your wordpress admin site with your username and password you provided when installing your wordpress software. Go over to Design, then over to Theme and search for your New installed theme and activate. It should then be visible on your blog. If you are using older versions of wordpress you can activate your new installed theme by going to Presentation and then Theme.

* You finished a successful WordPress Installation.

Option 2:How to Install your New WordPress Theme with Cpanel.

This is one tedious task and much more stressful when you have a wordpress theme with a lot of folders and files. I would recommend you stick with the FTP option which will transfer your files faster, save you a great deal of time and does much of the job for you. If you want to learn how to use Cpanel, heres how you do it.

* Log in to your Cpanel through Cpanel webhost domain with your webhost username and password. On your Cpanel Frontpage click on File Manager or Legacy File Manager.

* Open the public_html folder by clicking the folder icon by the side and not on the public_html text itself. Doing this will show all the files and folders in the public_html and clicking the public_html text will only show you the folder properties.

* Locate the wp_content folder and open through the icon folder. Then open the Theme Folder. This is where you upload all the new wordpress theme and folders.You will be installing the wordpress theme they way the files and folders are arranged in your computer.

* Create a New Folder by clicking on the “create a new folder” link at the top of the folders’ display. Then create the overall theme folder with the theme name. Then open the theme folder by clicking on the folder icon. Repeat the same process with all the folders in the WordPress Theme on your computer.

* You will have to install the files in the respective folders the way it is on your computer. All you have to do is clicking “upload files” when you are in the Folder that contains the files originally the way it is on your computer. On the upload page, click on browse and search for the files, then upload. Remember, clicking on the file name after upload will show you the edit properties for the file and you can change the File permissions CHMOD. Repeat this sequence for all Folders that contains files the way it is on your computer.

You’ll see that what you’ve been doing is transferring the files from the computer in the hierarchical manner into your web host the way they originally are. You see that it’s more tedious unlike Filezilla that transfers the Full WordPress themes and arranges the folders and files it contains automatically.

3 Ways to Design a Beautiful Web Site

Websites are the primary mode in which the data is presented in the cyberworld. Going by the amount of websites which are launched every day, it is an established truth that the internet needs websites to work. Hence, in order to make a successful website, you need much more than a few pages of content uploaded on the net. If you visit some of the latest websites, you will see that they all look classy and beautiful and have updated and informative content. Following are some ways to design a great looking website.

i. The first way to make a good looking website, you must have enough knowledge of web designing scripts and languages like JAVA, HTML, ASP etc. You should choose a script and language, you have expertise in. make a website that not only works properly but also has all the features and looks of a new age website. In this way, you will be able to monitor the back end scripts of your website and will able to change or rectify things according to your need, but making a website on these scripts requires extensive knowledge about them.

ii. The second way to design a website is by working on various website tools like Dream Weaver, Front Page, etc. which are easily available, but you must have knowledge of working on such tools. These tools and many others like these are available in the market and they all are very easy to use. There interfaces are also extremely easy to understand. You can also learn to operate them through free tutorials which are easily available on the net.

iii. Last but not the least, you can use templates to design your websites. These pre-configured templates can be easily downloaded from the internet. Most of them are free but you may have to pay a nominal price for some of the more advanced templates. Just find a template that goes with the feel of your website and download it. You are ready to build your website.

Hire a Web Development Company for a Professional Solution Instead of Using Free Templates

If you happen to browse the Internet at leisure, you would come across numerous promotional messages which stipulate that you can avail the benefits of a total website at just $79. This is often linked with web templates and this is utilized when people wish to save themselves from the annoyance of going to a web development company. However, this is not the ideal solution, in case you wish to construct a website for your company’s business.

People generally avail the usage of free web templates when they wish to construct a website for their use, and they do not wish to go to the trouble of availing the services of a web development company for this purpose. If you are desirous of constructing a website with the aid of templates, this would prove to be a catastrophic decision for you. This is even more so for businessmen who are desirous of witnessing their business escalating and for this purpose they are solely dependent on internet promotion. This is really not feasible though. Free of cost templates have a lot of restrictions, which you would do well to know.

A specialized web development company would be able to design a template which is quite eye-catching, however if you are willing to pay a greater amount for availing the services of a proficient graphics designer in a custom web development company, you can be assured of outstanding results.  There would be provision for a distinctive design and with every phase, your preference would be solicited. You can then opt for the color, theme or pattern as per your selection, and this would render the website with a distinctive yet personalized look. Additional usage of CSS would render a greater degree of functionality, as well as an exceptional look and feel. This effect is something which you would not be able to achieve with your free web template.

Free web templates can be downloaded which essentially translates to the fact that you are not the sole person who might have utilized the template which is being used by you, at present. This means that an exact replica of your site exists elsewhere. If you wish to render your website with an exceptional design which is at the same time, exclusive it is worthwhile to explore the option of a web development company for a professional solution.

There are certain sites which stipulate that you can customize the template. However, in a majority of the cases, people are unaware of the exact procedure by which this is accomplished. This would necessitate the use of image editing software, which you might not have, at present. Even if you do have it, it depends on whether or not you are skilled at using it. Another prerequisite is the awareness of coding plus coding software like Front page or Dreamweaver, which most people might not have. These issues would be rendered simpler if you can avail optimum usage of the services of a reputed web development company, who would suitably assist you in this regard rather than leaving you at the mercy of software which you are not skilled enough to comprehend.

This comparison must have convinced you that availing the services of a proficient web development company is infinitely preferable as compared with availing the services of free web templates, which do not serve any utilitarian purpose, and are merely ornamental in nature.

How to Create a Website in Less Than an Hour

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to create a website, this article will teach you how to create a website in less than an hour. Forget about everything you may have heard in the past, such as you need to learn HTML or hire a web designer to get your website up and running – that’s just not the case.

The fact is, you can create a website in less than an hour using free services available on the Internet, such as WordPress. Setting up a WordPress blog is as easy as1-2-3.

Step One: Selecting a Good Domain Name

Your first step will be to get a good domain name. You can register your name through ‘Name Cheap’ very inexpensively. However, before you do, take your time and really think about your domain name, as there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration.

Your domain name should reflect your website and tell the world what your website is all about.
Your domain name should contain your website’s most relevant keyword phrase for better search engine ranking.
Your domain name should be easily remembered.
Your domain name should only include letters to avoid causing any confusion.
Your domain name should not include abbreviations to avoid causing any confusion.

A great domain name can be easily remembered or even guessed by potential visitors and includes your most relevant keyword phrase.

Step Two: Selecting a Quality Web Host

Your next step will be to get a quality web host. Although there are several free hosting services available on the Internet, if you’re designing a website for business purposes, you should NEVER host your website with a free host.

In order to establish credibility, you must be willing to invest in your own domain name and professional web hosting. Websites hosted on free servers are not taken seriously and will suffer a serious loss of business.

Here are some basic features you should look for when selecting a web host:

24/7 reliable tech support
Your own domain name
Depending on the size of your site, a minimum of 50MB of server space with the option to upgrade later if needed
Unlimited true POP email accounts
Unlimited email aliases
Email forwarding
Unlimited autoresponders
Your own unrestricted CGI-Bin
Access to SSL Encryption for secure transactions
Access to a shopping cart
MySQL Database
Perl
PHP
Htaccess password protection
Server Side Includes (SSI) support
Design (and upload to) your site using HTML editing software
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions for those utilizing FrontPage
Unlimited free access to your server via FTP
Unlimited access to your website via an online control panel
Easy access to your log files
Statistics on visits to your website
No hidden fees

There are many good web hosts on the Internet that are very reasonably priced. Do some research and find a host that meets your needs.

Step Three: Create a Website

After you get your domain name and web host, your final step will be to create your website. Visit the WordPress org site to download the software. It won’t cost you a dime and will provide you with a professional looking website very quickly.

Next, install the software on your server. They provide great instructions, so you shouldn’t have any problems. However, if you would prefer, you can always host your website with one of the WordPress host recommendations, as they provide a one click installation option.

Once the software is installed, login to your admin by typing in your domain name followed by /wp-admin. You can then select a ‘Theme,’ which is the layout of your website, by clicking on the ‘Appearance’ link within the left menu.

And finally, click on ‘Posts’ – ‘Add New’ to make your first post. Type your information within the text editor and format it to suit your needs. Click on the ‘Preview’ button on the right to see how your post will look. When you’re ready to add it to your new website, click on ‘Publish.’

That’s all there is to it! WordPress makes it easy for anyone to create a website in less than an hour. Use it to your advantage.

Linux vs. Windows Hosting – Who's better?

The 2 major types of web hosting are the Linux and the Windows hosting. As we all know, Windows is a Microsoft product. So, getting a hosting with Windows hosting requires a license with Microsoft. This makes the price slightly higher. So, the question on which hosting plan is better? Let us make a comparison here.

The Windows operating system is the most used operating system in the world. It is said that 95% of all PCs uses it. Therefore, they are the dominant force and people looking for a host will be more likely to go for Windows.

On the other hand, Linux hosting is more superior because it is made by securityspace.com. According to surveys, Linux has an advantage over Windows. Therefore, most users who are using it ace no problems at all. But this does not mean that Windows are no good. They are actually better than Linux in a few areas.

For instance, the Linux system does not have the ASP.NET technology that comes with the .NET. it is only available in the Windows system. Another issue is the access to the MySQL database that is only available with Windows. You can also use other Microsoft applications like Sharepoints and Frontpage 2003 together with the hosting plan.

Nevertheless, the Linux system is good for users to build a very good website. It allows you to run your website with Apache, MySQL and PHP. The infrastructure that you can build is very solid. Also, the PHP is much more efficient when compared to Windows server. The price of a Linux hosting is also an added value because it will cost 20% less than Windows hosting plan.

Both hosting plans are well developed a can be used to build a successful website. You just need to know what your preferences are and you can decide which one to go for.
